Airbag construction and operation
An airbag is an inflatable cushion made of nylon or another synthetic material. Sensors trigger it in a sufficiently severe collision, and it inflates in a fraction of a second to help protect an occupant. It is designed to work with a correctly fastened seat belt and can itself be dangerous if it deploys while the occupant is not wearing one.
