Rear number-plate light

The rear number-plate lamp illuminates the plate whenever the vehicle's prescribed external lighting is in use, allowing identification without projecting coloured light to the rear. It is not a separate light switched on only according to the driver's estimate of darkness, and it need not remain on when a vehicle is lawfully parked off the road and no lighting rule requires it.
