Purpose and colours of retroreflectors

When illuminated, retroreflectors make stationary or moving vehicles and trailers easier to see, especially at night. Their colour and shape identify the side of the vehicle: white at the front of trailers and semi-trailers, red at the rear, and prescribed side reflectors elsewhere. Because they are passive, they cannot signal a turn or replace direction indicators.
