Overtaking prohibitions, exceptions and required space

On a two-lane, two-way road, overtaking is prohibited near bends and crests where visibility is insufficient; it may be allowed on the descending side of a crest when visibility is adequate. Overtaking on a bend or crest may also be possible on a road with two separate carriageways and at least two lanes in each direction, while remaining within the lanes for that direction. Never pass a vehicle that has stopped or slowed to give way to pedestrians, and never cross a continuous line. Acceleration and deceleration lanes are not overtaking lanes. Exceptions near junctions and level crossings apply only in specifically regulated layouts, such as control by traffic lights or an officer, or where the permitted manoeuvre does not enter opposing traffic. The space needed increases with vehicle length and when the speed difference is small. Return only when the overtaken driver will not have to brake.
