Low grip increases braking distance

Braking distance becomes longer whenever the tyres have less grip on the road. Water, snow, ice, mud and worn or unsuitable tyres reduce adhesion and require smoother braking, a lower speed and a greater following distance. A downhill gradient also lengthens braking distance, whereas an uphill gradient helps reduce it.
