Braking distance increases with the square of speed

Braking distance starts when the brakes are applied and ends when the vehicle comes to a stop; it does not include reaction distance. Under comparable conditions, it increases with the square of speed: doubling speed makes it about four times greater, tripling speed about nine times greater and quadrupling speed about sixteen times greater. Even a modest speed increase can therefore produce a much larger rise in the distance needed to stop.
