Safe following distance

Total stopping distance is reaction distance plus braking distance

Total stopping distance comprises two consecutive parts: the distance travelled while the driver perceives and reacts to the hazard, and the distance travelled from the start of braking until the vehicle stops. It therefore depends on speed, driver alertness, tyre condition, braking efficiency, road grip and gradient.
