Safe following distance

Distance travelled in one second

To estimate the distance travelled in one second, divide the speed in km/h by 3.6. For the theory test, remember the approximate values: 14 metres at 50 km/h, 28 metres at 100 km/h, 36 metres at 130 km/h and 42 metres at 150 km/h. This is the distance covered while one second passes, before adding any braking distance. It shows why even a short delay in reacting becomes dangerous at high speed.
