Appropriate speed and vehicle control

Keeping within the posted limit is not enough. Drivers must slow down whenever visibility, the road, traffic or the surrounding environment increases risk. Particular care is required on bends, at junctions, in narrow or obstructed places, on steep descents, in built-up areas, along roads bordered by buildings, at night and in places frequented by children. Speed must also be reduced in fog, mist, snow or ice and whenever passing oncoming traffic is difficult. The aim is to keep full control and be able to stop without a collision within the road that can actually be seen to be clear.
