Road markings and obstacle markings

An emergency lane is not a deceleration lane

The image shows a road divided into areas A, B and C. Area A is the emergency lane alongside the main carriageway. The associated official question makes clear that an emergency lane is not reserved for deceleration. An emergency lane is for emergencies and other specifically permitted uses. It must not be confused with a deceleration lane, which is provided so that vehicles leaving a main road can slow down without obstructing through traffic. B and C are ordinary traffic lanes.
