Main extra-urban roads have separate carriageways
A main extra-urban road has separate carriageways for opposing traffic and no at-grade junctions crossing it. Entry and exit are controlled, and designated stopping areas are provided. These characteristics distinguish it from an ordinary secondary extra-urban road and from a motorway.
