Attention, distraction and risk perception

Keep both eyes and attention on driving even when no immediate hazard is apparent. A few seconds of distraction are enough to miss critical information. Phones, navigation-system adjustments, the radio, loud music and animated conversations all divert attention; hands-free equipment removes the need to hold a device but not the mental workload. Fatigue, anxiety, stress and strong emotions alter perception and reaction, while the senses cannot process every stimulus. Observe both the road ahead and its edges, anticipate other people's mistakes, do not overestimate your ability, and wait when a situation such as a junction cannot yet be negotiated safely. Following the rules reduces danger and obstruction in every traffic condition.
