Responding to an incipient vehicle fire after a collision

After a collision, if there is a risk of fire, switch off the ignition to isolate the electrical system where possible. For a small incipient fire, and only if it is safe to intervene, use an extinguisher or direct sand or soil at the base of the flames; the theory-test guidance also mentions smothering small flames with a wet blanket when no extinguisher is available. Keep people away, call the emergency services and withdraw immediately if the fire grows or involves the fuel system.
