Maintaining an approved exhaust silencer

To reduce motor-vehicle noise, the exhaust silencer, or muffler, must be serviceable and of an approved type. Replace a damaged silencer with one approved for the particular vehicle, and avoid revving the engine while stationary. Modifying the exhaust can increase noise and make it non-compliant.
