Civil liability of the driver and vehicle owner

Civil liability for damage connected with the use of a vehicle may rest on both the driver and the vehicle owner. Criminal responsibility, by contrast, is personal and rests on the driver whose conduct constitutes the offence. The owner can avoid civil liability by proving that the vehicle was being used against their will.
