First checks for an unconscious casualty

If a road casualty is unconscious, check immediately whether they are breathing by looking for chest movement and listening and feeling for breaths; a hand placed lightly on the lower side of the chest or abdomen can help detect movement. Avoid moving the person unless necessary for immediate safety or unless spinal injury has been excluded. If breathing is obstructed, clear visible obstructions from the nose and mouth without probing blindly and call the emergency services.
