First aid for a bleeding wound

Cover a bleeding wound with sterile material, or the cleanest material available, and apply pressure to control the bleeding. If the wound is contaminated with soil, clean water may be used once circumstances allow, but never delay bleeding control: do not wash inside a heavily bleeding wound because water may interfere with clotting. Do not remove glass, wood or another object embedded in the wound; support it in place, press around it and await professional help.
