The driving-licence points system

Every driving licence starts with 20 points. During the first three years after a category B licence is issued, the deductions prescribed for offences committed by the novice driver are doubled. When several offences are committed at the same time, no more than 15 points may normally be deducted, unless one of them entails licence suspension. A holder with fewer than 20 points returns to 20 after two years without another points-carrying offence. If the balance reaches zero, the holder must undergo a driving-licence reassessment; the licence is not automatically revoked merely because the points have been exhausted.
