Penalties for interfering with a seat belt

A person may be penalised for altering or obstructing the normal operation of a seat belt, even if the belt is being worn. The belt must lie correctly across the body and must not be held loose, modified or prevented from retracting. Without a fastened seat belt, sudden braking can throw an occupant against the windscreen.
