Towing trailers and broken-down vehicles: effects and checks

Towing a trailer places greater demands on the vehicle: coolant temperature may rise uphill, the trailer's pushing force must be considered downhill and more distance is needed to stop. Crosswinds can exert a strong overturning force even on a light trailer. Place heavy items near the axle rather than concentrating them at the coupling, then check that the approved towing equipment is maintained and lubricated, the electrical connection works and the lights, signals and mirror view are adequate. In a tight turn the combination sweeps a wider area and the trailer wheels follow a tighter inner path. Trailers have their own registration plate and need static-risk insurance when detached; car trailers normally use an overrun brake. When a broken-down vehicle is towed, the person controlling its steering and brakes must be licensed to drive it. With the engine off, loss of power-steering assistance can make the steering much heavier, but does not necessarily lock it. There is no general rule requiring a three-metre gap, fourth gear or a category E licence solely because an emergency tow is taking place.
