Emergency towing of a disabled vehicle

A vehicle that can no longer move because of a breakdown or missing essential components may be towed by one motor vehicle using a strong connection such as a rope, chain, cable or rigid bar. The connection must be suitable and clearly marked so other traffic can see it. This private emergency towing is not permitted on motorways, where authorised recovery is required. The towed vehicle must display the prescribed warning; its ordinary rear lights alone are not always an adequate substitute.
