Do not crowd or cut in front of the overtaken vehicle

Maintain adequate lateral clearance throughout the passing phase and do not return until a safe gap exists. Check for a vehicle behind that may already be overtaking and for the vehicle ahead moving out at the same time. Closing too rapidly can cause a collision with the vehicle to be passed; entering the opposing path can cause a head-on collision; and returning too soon can strike or cut across the overtaken vehicle. A narrow carriageway increases all these risks. Do not remain in the overtaking lane longer than necessary.
