Traffic rules, manoeuvres and driving conduct

Making a U-turn on a two-way road

Before making a U-turn, check that it is permitted, visibility is sufficient and the manoeuvre will not endanger or obstruct anyone. Give way to all approaching traffic and signal with the direction indicator, not the hazard warning lights. Abandon the manoeuvre if traffic is heavy and continuous or visibility is poor; a broken centre line does not make an otherwise unsafe U-turn acceptable. Giving way does not make a U-turn lawful on a bend. Where the location and conditions permit it, the road need not be wide enough to complete the turn in one movement: a multi-point turn is possible only if it remains lawful and safe.
