Traffic rules, manoeuvres and driving conduct

Road with two separate carriageways

A central reservation physically separates two carriageways. A carriageway is not a lane: each may itself contain one or more lanes and normally carries traffic in its assigned direction. Drivers overtake by using the appropriate lane within their carriageway, not by moving onto the other carriageway. In diagrams, distinguish physical carriageway separators from lane markings before deciding where normal travel and overtaking take place.
