A ball rolling into the road, especially in a built-up area, is a strong warning that a child may run after it without checking for traffic. Reduce speed immediately but progressively, check the mirrors and prepare to stop; smooth deceleration also reduces the risk of being struck from behind. Do not swerve sharply or enter the opposing lane merely to avoid the ball. Hazard warning lights are not a substitute for slowing down and being able to stop.
