Broken white edge line

Edge lines define the carriageway. They are continuous beside verges and emergency lanes, but become broken where entry or exit must be possible, for example at a road that must give way, a branch road, an acceleration or deceleration lane, a lay-by or an authorised vehicle access. The broken line therefore marks a crossable section of the carriageway edge; it does not by itself identify the start of a verge and does not separate the carriageway from an emergency lane.
