Two-way carriageway with two lanes in each direction

The double solid centre line separates opposing traffic and must not be crossed. Each direction nevertheless has two lanes: the right-hand lane is used for normal driving, while the left-hand lane is normally used for overtaking. Because an overtake can be completed without entering the side used by oncoming traffic, overtaking may also be permitted on a bend when it can be carried out safely. It remains prohibited to make a U-turn across the solid lines or to begin overtaking when a vehicle behind has already started the same manoeuvre.
