Forces acting on a vehicle in a bend

When a vehicle follows a bend, its inertia tends to carry it towards the outside of the curve. Tyre grip must provide the inward force needed to maintain the curved path. Excessive speed can exceed the available grip, causing a skid, and can also contribute to overturning, especially in a high or heavily loaded vehicle.
