Periodic replacement of the engine air filter helps the engine run efficiently and limits emissions. On a diesel vehicle, have the fuel system, including the injection pump and injectors, checked periodically. If the exhaust smoke becomes excessively dark, have the engine inspected for a combustion or fuel-system fault.
