Driving-licence renewal and validity

For categories A, B and BE, the ordinary validity period is ten years up to age 50, five years from 50 to 70, three years from 70 to 80, and two years after 80, subject to individual restrictions and alignment of the expiry date with the holder's birthday. A special category B licence follows stricter rules: in the related theory questions, it is valid for five years up to age 70 unless the document specifies otherwise. Renewal is not automatic; it requires an examination by an authorised doctor and is confirmed only if the holder still meets the physical and mental fitness requirements.
