Collisions between vehicles of very different mass

In an impact, the lighter vehicle generally undergoes the greater change in speed and its occupants are exposed to more severe forces. Drivers of both light and heavy vehicles must therefore leave safe distances and avoid assuming that a larger vehicle protects everyone involved. Differences in performance and mass complicate, rather than improve, road safety.
