Signal before overtaking and leave adequate lateral clearance

Check that the manoeuvre is permitted and safe, then use the direction indicator before moving out. Normally overtake on the left and leave adequate lateral clearance. Return to the right as soon as possible only when there is a safe gap, without danger, obstruction or cutting across the overtaken vehicle. The driver being overtaken must facilitate the manoeuvre and must not accelerate; on a road with one lane in each direction, that driver must keep as close as possible to the right-hand edge. Do not begin if visibility or carriageway width is insufficient to finish safely.
