Road divided into three separate carriageways

This is not one very wide carriageway with many lanes: the physical central reservations create three distinct carriageways. Under the rule tested for this layout, vehicles normally use the central or right-hand carriageway relative to their direction of travel. Lane-use rules then apply within the chosen carriageway. Distinguishing a lane from a carriageway is essential: a lane is a longitudinal part of a carriageway, whereas a central reservation separates one carriageway from another.
