Traffic rules, manoeuvres and driving conduct

Reversing out of a parking space into traffic

The figure shows vehicles parked at an angle or parallel to the edge of the carriageway. The questions use vehicles S and E in particular to illustrate the rules applying to anyone reversing into traffic: before moving, make sure the road is clear, give the appropriate direction signal and proceed slowly with particular care. The reversing driver must give way to all road users already moving along the road from either direction, including cyclists, and check carefully for pedestrians behind the vehicle. Hazard warning lights and the rear fog light are not substitutes for a direction indicator, and sounding the horn throughout the manoeuvre does not create priority.
