Speed and poor road conditions increase total stopping distance

Higher speed increases both the distance covered during reaction time and, much more sharply, the braking distance. Snow and mud reduce tyre grip and lengthen the stop; worn tyres have the same effect. Reducing speed and using serviceable tyres shortens the distance required. A rough, high-grip surface does not by itself increase stopping distance, although the actual road condition must always be assessed.
