Reaction distance is travelled before braking begins

Reaction distance is travelled between recognising a hazard and starting to brake. The vehicle continues moving throughout this interval. A safe following distance must allow for this reaction distance and for the subsequent braking distance, so it may need to be longer than the reaction distance alone.
