Safe following distance

Following distance also depends on the driver's physical and mental condition

A driver's alertness, health, fatigue and reaction time affect how quickly a hazard can be recognised and braking can begin. A safe following distance must therefore take account of the driver's physical and mental condition and must always be sufficient to avoid a rear-end collision if the vehicle ahead slows or stops.
