A vehicle stranded on railway tracks and the dangers of coasting downhill

If a vehicle becomes immobilised on railway tracks at a level crossing, the first priority is to push or tow it clear. If it cannot be removed immediately, all occupants must leave and move to safety; railway staff must be alerted and approaching train drivers warned of the danger in sufficient time. Coasting down a long descent in neutral with the engine switched off is also dangerous. Engine braking is lost and power assistance for the brakes and steering may weaken or stop, making braking and steering harder, lengthening the braking distance and increasing collision risk. Keep a gear engaged, leave the engine running and never remove the ignition key while descending.
