Directional traffic lights with arrows

Directional traffic lights use red, amber or green arrows and apply to the direction shown. A green arrow permits movement in that direction; a red arrow prohibits it; a steady amber arrow requires drivers to stop if they can do so safely, or to clear the junction if they have already entered it. A flashing amber arrow calls for particular caution. The arrow does not apply indiscriminately to every movement at the junction. Its colour and direction must be read together, with reference to the lane or traffic stream it controls.
