Broken edge line and lay-by

The figure shows a roadside lay-by separated from the carriageway by a broken white edge line. Vehicles may cross the line to enter the lay-by or return to the carriageway after making sure the manoeuvre is safe. It is not a line that may only be crossed in emergencies and does not by itself prohibit parking: the side area is intended as a stopping or parking place according to its function and any signs present.
