Edge line and acceleration lane

This broken white edge line separates the main carriageway from an acceleration lane. It does not enclose a lay-by. The taper and side lane show how joining traffic progressively enters the main flow. Vehicles in the acceleration lane use it to build an appropriate speed and merge only after giving way and finding a safe gap.
