STOP: stop and give way

This STOP sign requires a complete stop at the transverse stop line, or before entering the junction when no line is present, and requires drivers to give way to traffic from both the right and left. It is used where the intersecting road has priority, often at dangerous junctions or where visibility is poor. It must still be obeyed when traffic lights are flashing amber; outside built-up areas it is preceded by the appropriate advance warning. You must stop even when no other vehicle is visible. It is not a customs or police checkpoint and does not prohibit all traffic.
