Pedestrian refuge islands

A pedestrian refuge island is a protected area within or beside the carriageway. At a pedestrian crossing, it allows people to pause safely when they cannot cross the whole road in one movement. When used as a boarding island, it provides a safer place for passengers to board or leave a tram, trolleybus or bus. It may be marked by illuminated bollards showing a steady yellow light.
