Lane: definition and uses

A lane may be used for ordinary driving, overtaking, acceleration, deceleration or emergencies. It may also be assigned to a particular direction, reserved for certain vehicle categories or prohibited to others. Lane boundaries may be solid or broken, and the type of line determines whether it may be crossed. The road authority may also set a mandatory minimum speed for a lane. A lane always forms part of a carriageway and must not be confused with the entire carriageway.
